In traditional Muslim beliefs, the date ajwa is associated with a fight against witchcraft and poison.
But where does this belief come from? From hadith? From the Koran? Or is it a belief that remains traditional?
The Prophet ﷺ said:
He who eats seven Al Ajwa dates in the morning will not be affected on that day by either poison or sorcery.
Authentic Hadith reported by Bukhari in his Sahih n°5769 and Mouslim in his Sahih n°2047.
The ajwa date therefore has many benefits to help fight poison and sorcery when consumed as indicated in the hadith.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The dates al ajwa come from Paradise, they are a cure against poison [...]"
Reported by Tirmidhi in his Sunan no. 2066 who authenticated it and it was also authenticated by Sheikh Albani in his correction of Sunan Tirmidhi.
In addition to the previous hadith, then, we have here another mention of the benefits of ajwa dates over poison. And here's another:
According to Aicha, the Prophet's wife (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace and salvation be upon him) said, "In the Ajwa date, there is certainly healing and an antidote if it is eaten early in the morning."
Hadith reported by Mouslim in his Sahih n°2048.
There is a divergence among scholars regarding the dates that are referred to by these ahadith.
One part of them believes that they apply only to the ajwa variety of date that grows in Medina. While the other states that it is a general recommendation to consume all types of date varieties on an empty stomach in the morning.
For the avoidance of doubt, perhaps consuming 7 Ajwa dates in the morning is the safest?
In any case, the links between ajwa dates, sorcery and poison are proven by the authentic hadith cited above.
